Athol Trollip fails on key promise
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has extended its deadline to eradicate the bucket system in the city by six months – leaving mayor Athol Trollip failing to deliver on one of his biggest political promises. This comes as the municipality has also scrapped the provision of chemical toilets – a temporary replacement for the bucket system – as it is too costly. Mzwandile Masina under-delivers on housing promise as metro aims for 100 000 houses in 5 years
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mzwandile Masina has promised to deliver 100 000 houses in five years – an ambitious target for any metro. In the financial year that ended on June 30, he said the metro would deliver “approximately 5 000” houses. How did Ekurhuleni fare?
The mayor’s office says 3 800 houses were provided in 2016/17. Of these, 582 were “directly implemented” by the city. The remaining 3 218 were delivered by the provincial government.
The promise was therefore only kept in part.
Are housing units without electricity complete? We think not
In May, Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba promised to complete 1 841 housing units that were part of incomplete housing projects by the end of June. The number of incomplete housing projects had “horrified” him, Mashaba said.
