Promise date: 31 May 2022
Due date: 31 August 2022
Source: Budget policy statement
Promise outcome: Broken
In May, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda promised residents that satellite technology would “soon” be used to monitor and detect water leaks in the metro.
“We are confident that this initiative is going to drastically reduce water losses,” Kaunda said in his 2022/23 budget policy statement.
Asked whether the technology was being used, eThekwini spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed that the mayor had made the promise, but said flooding had diverted attention to fixing damaged infrastructure. “Despite all this, we can confirm that this initiative is still part of our agenda.”
Verdict
The water leak detection technology the mayor promised is not yet in use. As we assign a promise due date of three months to promises that contain the word “soon”, we rate this promise as broken.
